The Story

Cedar Sage (Salvia roemeriana) is a striking, red-flowered perennial herb native to central and west Texas, extending into northern Mexico. Adapted to thrive in the shade and fine leaf mulch of Ashe Junipers (Juniperus ashei), this drought-tolerant salvia is ideal for dry, rocky, limestone-based soils. Its rounded, scalloped leaves form a low-growing rosette, while vivid crimson blooms rise on 2-3 inch racemes from early spring through summer, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. Cedar Sage excels in woodland gardens, shaded rock gardens, and containers, bringing ornamental appeal and wildlife benefits. Though highly deer-resistant, it requires well-drained soil and careful leaf management for successful naturalization.
