The Story

Liatris spicata is a tall, perennial herb known for its dense, feathery spikes of purple flowers that bloom from the top down. Commonly called Dense Blazing Star or Dense Gayfeather, this upright, slender plant reaches 2-6 feet in height and features linear, grass-like leaves concentrated at the base but extending up the stem. Thriving in full sun and moist, well-drained soils, it is well-suited for prairies, marsh edges, and moist woodlands. The vibrant mid-to-late summer blooms are highly attractive to butterflies, hummingbirds, and birds, making it an excellent pollinator-friendly addition to gardens and native landscapes.
