The Story

Eastern Gammagrass, Tripsacum dactyloides, is a perennial clumping grass native to Texas and all of the Americas. This grass likes swampy, moist soils and serves as a food source and habitat for birds, deer, and butterflies. It is a larval host for the bunchgrass skipper. A relative of corn, this grass typically stays 2-3 feet tall but has the potential to grow 12 feet tall! 

Scientific Name: Tripsacum dactyloides

Origin: Texas, North, Central, and South America

Height: Up to 12 feet tall (usually less than 3 feet)

Spread: 2 to 3 feet

Light: Part Shade

Water: High
