Taxodium mucronatum is a large, perennial, evergreen to semi-deciduous tree that thrives in wet soils along swamps, streams, and riverbanks. Commonly known as Montezuma Bald Cypress, it features a tall, straight trunk with a broad, spreading crown and drooping twigs. Its trunk base is enlarged with ridges, and it sometimes develops small “knees” from submerged roots. Faster-growing than its relative, the Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum), it can reach up to 130 feet tall. Blooming in late winter to early spring (February-March), its small, brown cones ripen in October, releasing seeds when moisture conditions allow. This long-lived tree serves as nesting and cover for birds and provides seeds for small mammals.
