The Story

Aromatic Aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium) is a perennial herb that thrives in rocky, calcareous, or sandy soils, often found in calcareous prairies and well-drained areas. Preferring low water use, it flourishes in both full sun and partial shade. This aster typically reaches up to 3 feet tall, with much-branched, rigid stems and narrow leaves sparsely covered in short hairs. From September through November, it produces dazzling purple or violet flower heads composed of about 30 ray florets surrounding 25-50 yellow disc florets. As a fall bloomer, Aromatic Aster adds vibrant color late in the growing season and serves as an essential nectar source for pollinators.
